Thermal Transfer Ribbons

Thermal transfer ribbons or thermal ribbons are used for printing with thermal transfer printers and thermal transfer labels. To choose the right ribbon for your application, you will need to know 2 things:

• The type of ink coating on the ribbon: wax, wax/resin or resin. Wax ribbons are most commonly used with paper labels and are the most economical. Wax/resin ribbons are more durable than wax ribbons and are often used with polypropylene labels. Full resin ribbons are the most durable and are typically used with more durable label materials like polyester, vinyl and other synthetic materials.

• The wind direction of the ink: coat side out (CSO) or coat side in (CSI). If you are unsure about this, an easy way to determine is to find the duller (not shiny) side of the ribbon. If this duller side faces out, the ribbon roll is CSO. If the opposite is true, then the ribbon roll is CSI.
